European Members Score High at Pinnacle Awards

At the 2006 IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards in Ottawa Canada, members of IFEA Europe did very well this year.

Although only a few European festivals participated in the competition, those that did were able to compete with colleagues from around the world. Congratulations to all our award winning colleagues!


The Opern Film Festival by
Uwe Bergmann Agentur from Hamburg, Germany, made it to the highest Grand Pinnacle level and won Bronze (category budgets between $250,000-$749,999). Other European members that won either Gold, Silver or Bronze in different categories were the International Festival Lent, Maribor, Slovenia and  Ducos/ACR and Rotterdam Festivals, both from Rotterdam the Netherlands.

The role of the arts and culture in the European integration of the Balkans was the main theme explored by the ECF's Balkan Reflection Group. A new publication, The Heart of the Matter, offers expert analysis and reflection from the ten personalities (artists, intellectuals, cultural producers and political experts) engaged in this exercise.

Deadline: 15 Nov 2006 WASTE - CESTA’s 12th Arts Festival of International, Interdisciplinary Collaborations calls for submissions from artists in all disciplines. The event takes place in Tabor, Czech Republic in August 2007.

NEW: The Magic Draa Festival

This new festival will showcase talented but little known African bands from around the world and present traditional music and dance from the "Draa" valley. The festival takes place at the legendary stop-off point of the north-bound Sahara camel caravans - Zagora in Morocco. The festival offers accommodation in luxurious Bedouin tents. Although supported by the Moroccan Government the organisers receive no financial assistance and thus maintain a fully independent festival.

DG EAC seeks consultation

The perception and role of culture in the EU is gradually changing. Whereas, in the past, the question was what Europe could do for culture, there is a growing recognition that culture lies at the heart of the European project and has a unique and indispensable role to play. It is therefore increasingly necessary to also ask what culture can do for Europe. The Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) is preparing a Communication on culture which seeks to address these issues. 4th Monaco International Dance Biennial - 7 to 16 December 2006

Once again, this international festival and its accompanying professional forum will be prolific, overflowing with artists’ projects. For the 2006 edition, the festival has been placed under the sign of the Medusa. Just as contemporary dance becomes more interesting as the eye learns to see beyond conventions and pre-conceived notions, so we hope to guide the spectator toward unknown universes where artists shall be their guides.
