IFEA Europe Newsletter | April 2008

Dear Member,

Although it feels that our meeting in Reykjavik is only just behind us, our next meeting in Borlänge Sweden is already on the horizon and only 2,5 months away.

If you were not present at IFEA Europe’s 2008 annual conference in Reykjavik, you really missed out on a unique event.

While the Board of Directors of IFEA Europe appreciate the many positive comments about the speakers and overall programme we have received from those present, we would like to pass the appraisal to VisitReykjavik and the people of Iceland. Their commitment shaped a most memorable conference.

Please note that selected speaker’s slides from the conference are available for download area at here.

Please join us 25-28 June during our 2008 Behind the Scenes Session at the Peace & Love Festival in Sweden. Registration for members is free (limited availability)!

NEW EDINBURGH COMEDY FESTIVAL UNDER ATTACK
by Jeroen Mourik

The announcement by four of the main venues of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to launch a new comedy festival in August this year has been heavily criticized over the last two weeks by stakeholders in our industry.

The four venues presented their plan as a mere marketing exercise to combine their sales efforts. Critics say it is only the first step to break away from the Festival Fringe completely, which would have serious implications on the future of the festival.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has a broad mix of comedy, theatre, dance, musical theatre and music. Last year, both theatre and comedy covered around 31% of the festival programme each. The four venues initiating the new comedy festival (the Assembly, Pleasance, Underbelly and Gilded Balloon) had a combined share of 50% of all Fringe ticket sales.

The Fringe sold 1.6 million tickets in 2007, generating over £10 million at the box office!

IFEA EUROPE TARGETS EVENT EDUCATION

For many years, a number of university researchers have contributed to the conferences and general network of IFEA Europe. However, as event education has grown substantially across Europe in recent years, we would like to broaden our outreach to the educational field and would welcome suggestions from our members for universities with good event management education that we might include in our network. Please send your ideas/recommendations to office@ifeaeurope.com.
