Sponsors Bring Festivals in Trouble

BBC news reports that recently the Rock Against Racism concert in London faced a 75,000 GBP deficit when a main sponsor withdrew at the last minute. The event organisers made an appeal to the performing artists due to perform and got saved when singer Morrissey made a personal donation and urged his management, promoters and agency to step in.

Not as lucky was the Folk and Blues festival on the Isle of Wight who recently attracted negative publicity for not paying artists and local service providers that delivered at the festival in September 2007. The organizers state in a BBC News article that the reason for the delayed payment is because sponsors have not paid them.

Let’s hope that this does not become a new trend.

The magazine of rock Crawdaddy has published an interesting article by Jason Thomas on the symbiotic relationship between rock festivals and Indie Rock and the Indie Rock movement. Whilst doing so, he makes an interesting comparison between the 60’s generation of Woodstock and his own generation.

“This resurgence of the indie-driven festivals has some notable differences from the surge of youth-oriented music festivals in the ’60s. They are not based around some common spirit of great change looming on the horizon. Much of the cynicism that divides the attitudes of my generation from that of the ’60s may come from the fact that many of us sit in cubicles working corporate jobs while having terror rained down upon us by bosses who will warmly recount the freedom and great change that seemed to be unstoppable as they pranced around at Woodstock.”
