Eurobarometer study on European, culture and cultural values

* 89% perceive a greater need for ‘culture’ to be promoted at EU-level;

* 88% feel that cultural exchanges are important, and they call on the European Union to facilitate cultural exchanges for Europeans, and so promote intercultural dialogue; 

These are some of the findings of the Eurobarometer study on Europeans, culture and cultural values published by the European Commission.

 At the beginning of October, IFEA Europe participated at FESTIVAK - the largest expo and trade show in the Benelux for festival and public event professionals. During the expo the following items got our attention:

Ticket Prices for Performing Arts becoming BIG business

Guardian: “Americans are used to pawning the silverware for a couple of tickets to the Super Bowl or the upcoming World Series, but $3,500 (£1,720) for a performance of Shakespeare?”

Newseditor from Arts Professional says: “This appears to not be a one-off freak thing either, with the G reporting that online retailers Stubhub and Gotickets are offering tickets for similar prices.”

China Now

China Now, the UK’s biggest-ever celebration of contemporary Chinese culture, is set to launch in February 2008. The festival will see about 1,000 cultural events happening around the country in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics in July, with Councils around Britain working alongside local Chinese communities organising events in celebration of the Chinese New Year on 7 February. A firework display at London’s O2 centre is planned for early February, followed by China Art Now, a group of major exhibitions of contemporary Chinese art, set to open later in the month.
