Keynote: Arts versus Economics
by Rose Fenton, former artistic director of LIFT (London’s International Festival of Theatre).

Has not our entire culture become festivalised, increasingly run by “destination marketing” or regeneration agencies? How can we be true to their original spirit? What is the place of Festivals today? What is their role at a local, national and international level and what strategies might we employ to fully realize this role? These are all questions that will be raised during this Keynote by Rose Fenton.

Rose Fenton strongly advocates that it is vital that festivals are led by the artistic vision. Then all else can follow.

Keynote: Handling Grow Spurts
by Paul Gudgin Festival Director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

What once started small is now the largest arts festival in the world. With over 28,000 performances, 17,000 artists, 261 venues, 1.5 million tickets sold and 70 million hits on their website during their festival last year; the Edinburgh Festival Fringe may call itself indeed the world’s largest arts festival.

Paul Gudgin has run the organization for the past eight years during which the festival passed some impressive milestones. In his keynote he reveals how to handle grow spurts when you are experiencing exponential growth in your festival.

Hellenic Culture Organization

We are sure that all conference delegates agree with us: the hospitality by the Hellenic Culture Organization (HCO) was overwhelming. We shared a memorable social programme including great theatre performances by Greek theatre companies, some excellent excursions, great parties and not to forget the large portions of delicious Greek food.

If you would like to send the HCO your personal Thank You and appreciation, please email Georgia Illiopoulou, General Manager, at
